Yelena Roslaya

For her thesis work, Roslaya has created four clay drums inspired by her own synesthesia. She wanted to explorer how different people experience sound, and was heavily influenced by deaf musicians that use vibrations to “hear” the music. Roslaya sculpted Udu drums out of clay and applied various types of glaze to add texture, so when people touched the drums to play the would have another physical experience. She also experimented with 3-D printing soundwaves. In her thesis exhibit, Roslaya added a digital screen and WinAmp software that reacted to the drumming and other sounds in the exhibit, which connected both the visual and sound, thus connecting her thesis to synesthesia.
